Senderos del Alma, Paths of the Soul, Leads to Mexican Artist, Ivan Baltazar
By Jane Custer, founder of VozMaya
On March 8, 2013 I returned to the Hacienda Uxmal to attend an art exhibit, called Sacred Consciousness, or Conciencia Sagrada. The artist behind this amazing collection is Ivan Baltazar, a young Mexican painter from Mérida.
I had tried for two years to find a Maya painter for my VozMaya cards to no avail. I tried the University of Yucatan, Mayan language schools, friends in Mexico, yet I was never able to get in touch with anyone who did Maya art. Now here was just such a person.
It turned out that Ivan and his partner, Claudia, were conducting an art therapy workshop for 25 female employees of Hacienda Uxmal and the Lodge at Uxmal in honor of International Women’s Day. Did I want to attend?
I felt hesitant. I’m ‘stick-figure’–challenged, and anything having to do with drawing scares me. Did these women from Maya communities really want a tall, middle-aged gringa in their workshop?
Claudia, the psychologist and main workshop leader, assured me I’d be welcomed into the group. I’m so glad I joined in. There were exercises in trust and chances to express ourselves, jotting down our thought at our individual writing spaces on the wall, team building exercises in groups of two and sometimes more.
We also had the opportunity to share our ideas on women’s roll today, and yes, a little bit of art, but group art, used to express an idea or belief. After our three-hour workshop we enjoyed cake, ate roasted corn on the cob Maya-style (with Maya spices, chile powder, cream, and parmesan cheese), all while we laughed and talked under the beautiful thatched palapa and watched the sun set in this magical setting.
Claudia, Ivan and their partner, Carlos Cosio, have degrees in Psychology, and Art Therapy. In addition Ivan is a talented painter and Carlos is a Hip Hop artist. Together they comprise an amazing group of talented, caring individuals.
So….VozMaya is now supporting Senderos del Alma by posting a list of materials needed in their art therapy workshops in hopes that caring citizens traveling to Mérida or Cancún might contribute one or two items from the list. Sales from the VozMaya card deck are also going to support this cause.
